Acknowledgments
The knowledge yielded by the Loess Plateau has been hard won over many years. Especially remarkable is the work of the millions of people who live on the plateau. Their commitment and labor are helping to show the way forward for the entire world. I would like to acknowledge the openness and generosity of several parts of the Chinese Government including, the Chinese Ministry of Finance, the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources, the State Council Leading Group for Poverty Eradication, and the China International Cultural Exchange Audio-Visual Publishing House. Several organizations have funded specific trips into the area and in our ongoing research in Africa; including The World Bank, UNICEF, ADRA, GEF, DFID, and UNDP. The World Bank, DFID, the Netherlands Foreign Ministry and German GTZ have all demonstrated important technologies and assisted this work. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has helped us to disseminate the materials.
Since beginning the documentation of the Loess Plateau in 1995, many people have participated in the documentation in China and around the world. Juergen Voegele, Achim Fock, Francis Dobbs at the World Bank were instrumental in initially deploying us. John Warburton, Liz Drake, and Liz Wilson from DFID have been consistently helpful. Kosima Weber Liu has provided creative designs. Daniel Rote participated in 2 trips to the plateau. Zhang Yi Zhong worked on several trips to the plateau as sound technician and associate producer. Mathew Knight and Peter Kalkma from New Zealand took many wonderful pictures. The Film Board of Tasmania gave Moneka Knight an Assistant Director fellowship to work for ½ a year in 2005, the Australian Government provided “Youth Ambassadors” Jules Ambrosine and Peta Khan to work in 2006 and 2007. Vincent Ng and Malte Beckmann made contributions. Silvan, Serene and Forest Liu have all helped in various ways. Most recently Joachim Siegert and Patrick Augenstein have been working closely on the technical and science aspects of “Earth’s Hope”. DFID, DEFRA, Rothamsted Research have contributed support and understanding. Jane Goodall, Ian Crute, Professor David Powlson, Professor Stephen Nortcliff, David Dent, Clyde Goulden have all provided encouragement and direction.
It is the work of these and many other individuals and institutions who have made this journey of knowledge possible. The efforts of all those who participated whether they are mentioned or not, have helped “Earth’s Hope” to achieve whatever it has. We all hope that the knowledge contained within “Earth’s Hope” enriches individual and collective life and helps to address the serious challenges that we now face, of biodiversity loss, fresh water stress, desertification, climate change, poverty and disparity. As this knowledge passes to you, now you have a choice of what to do with it.
