Earth's Hope: Envisioning a Future without Poverty and a World with Intact Ecosystems

Started: 1995

Earth's Hope is a multi-media, mass-media initiative working to engage the international community in an integrated approach to poverty reduction and large scale ecosystem rehabilitation -- as successfully implemented on China's Loess Plateau, in order to end land degradation, restore the environment and lift millions out of poverty.  Consistent study of these issues have led to the creation of several films on the subject, including The Lessons of the Loess Plateau.

History has repeatedly shown that fundamental ecosystem functions including biodiversity, soil stability, natural fertility, hydrological regulation and carbon sequestration are the determining factors of whether civilizations survive or fail and whether ecosystems become sustainable or collapse.

In the Loess Plateau, we have seen over the past decade an amazing transformation that suggests that it is possible to rehabilitate large-scale damaged ecosystems and regain vital lost ecosystem functions. This represents a paradigm shift in human understanding and behavior and is exactly the knowledge needed today to address many of our most pressing concerns, including food security, fresh water, habitat, poverty, income disparity and even climate change.
